Cosmetic Dental Procedures

Whether you are self-conscious about your smile or if you just want to look your best, we offer several procedures that can give you that smile you have always dreamed about and increase the confidence in your appearance.

Veneers are used to cover over the front surface of teeth to enhance their appearance.  They can be used to change the colour, shape and/or size of teeth. Stains, minor chips, misalignment, or other imperfections can be concealed with the thin porcelain shells, which slide over the front surface of teeth. Porcelain veneers are made by a dental lab after the tooth has been prepared by the dentist at the first visit. At the second appointment the porcelain veneer is bonded to the tooth and provide a very natural tooth look. Veneers have some risk of fracturing if exposed to abnormal forces from trauma or biting into something harder than food.

Veneers can be used to cover one tooth, or a full set can be applied for a dramatic smile makeover.

The tooth whitening process brightens teeth by removing discoloration and stains on teeth. The degree of improvement will depend upon how severely the teeth are stained or discolored as well as the nature of the stains.

A Peroxide based gel is used to “bleach” the teeth. There are several ways of delivering the whitening gel to the surface of the tooth.  There are take home kits available at pharmacies, custom take home kits made by your dentist, or in office whitening done at the dental office. The whitening products available through your dental office are stronger than store bought ones and provide better results.

The main side effects of teeth whitening are temperature sensitivity to the teeth and irritation to the soft tissues of the mouth. For this reason, and because in-office treatments are more effective, it is best to undergo teeth whitening treatment under the supervision of a dentist. Under normal recommended use, tooth whitening products cause no long-term damage to the teeth.

This procedure uses tooth coloured composite filling material to cover over the surface of the tooth.  It is done in one visit and can be used to repair small chips and small cosmetic improvements.  The entire front surface can be bonded over similar to a porcelain veneer. However , they typically have a shorter life span, are not as natural looking and are less expensive than the porcelain veneers.

Replacing old dark amalgam fillings is one way to help whiten your smile. The metal in amalgam fillings can give teeth a dark or gray appearance even on the surfaces that aren’t covered by the filling. Composite fillings can be matched to your natural tooth colour and provide a strong restoration that looks natural.
